Damn Few: Making the Modern SEAL Warrior, is a memoir about Rorke Denver and his life as a Navy SEAL. The book talks about his life before and during his service in the Navy, and how it helped him become a better soldier. The book talks about the intense training that he and many others go through to become Navy SEALS. I really connected to Rorke in this book because he played lacrosse, which I think is cool. Being a Navy SEAL is tough, but Rorke says it is worth it. When I began reading the book, I thought it would be interesting. I figured it would be an ok read. It was much more. It showed me what it would take to be a Navy SEAL. Rorke also talks about his ops in Afghanistan and Iraq. The dedication that each SEAL has for his op is huge. They are ready to go anytime. They are warriors.
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus was a tale about a scientist named Frankenstein and his desire to create a immortal human. In figuring out how to do this, Frankenstein creates the Creature. The Creature was a hideous beast that Frankenstein had unexpectedly created. This book was good for me because it was a challenge to read. The early romanticism was done creatively, blending darkness and human feelings. I thought the book was good and was a good story. I was able to understand the meaning behind the story and the story itself. The vocabulary took some time getting used to, but besides that it is a good book that high schools should require. High schools should require Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus because the reader becomes a better reader because of the difficult language and the way it is written. That is the reason Mary Shelley's Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus was a good book and represents romanticism so well.
Night was written by Elie Wiesel and is about his experience in Germany when Nazis forced him and his family into concentration camp. The transition from peace to Nazi control was slow and methodical. It was clever, really. They made it seem like a peaceful transition. Then, out of nowhere, the Nazis became hostile and forced them into ghettos. Once they were moved into these ghettos, they were moved, by train, to the concentration camps. The camps were horrible. The Nazis were smart in forcing the Jews to fight against each other. I thought this book was excellent. It showed the evils that Hitler and the Nazi regime did to people they saw as imperfect. The Night was a good book and should be required to read in high school because it is a history lesson with a good story on the side. I highly recommend this book for everyone who wants a good read.
Four US Navy SEALS departed one clear night in early July 2005 for the mountainous Afghanistan-Pakistan border for a reconnaissance mission. Their task was to document the activity of an al Qaeda leader rumored to be very close to Bin Laden with a small army in a Taliban stronghold. Five days later, only one of those Navy SEALS made it out alive.
This is the story of the only survivor of Operation Redwing, SEAL fire team leader Marcus Luttrell, and the extraordinary firefight that led to the largest loss of life in American Navy SEAL history. His squadmates fought valiantly beside him until he was the only one left alive, blasted by an RPG into a place where his pursuers could not find him. Over the next four days, terribly injured and presumed dead, Luttrell crawled for miles through the mountains and was taken in by sympathetic villagers who risked their lives to keep him safe from surrounding Taliban warriors. I think this book is magnificent because it shows the valiance and honor these guys have.
